Memorial Cards

Memorial Memorial cards are small cards that the funeral home traditionally prints as a tribute to the deceased. These small touches of memory allow beloved family members to remain at the side of the grieving relative and become a convenient source of comfort and familiarity for a loved one in search of a spiritual connection.

Memorial cards are often laminated and included in the thank you notes the family sends to friends and relatives who could not attend the calling hours or the funeral. Many memorial cards include a favorite picture of the deceased and a poem or prayer he/she was particularly fond of. Some common prayers are included on this page. If you have a home computer you can make memorial cards to suit your taste. There are also examples on the Internet.

Depending on your time frame and the equipment you have at home, producing your own memorial cards can be as economical as the standard funeral home card. You may also find it helpful in the grieving / healing process to produce a memorial for a loved one.

SAMPLES OF PRAYERS

To Those I Love and Those Who Love Me:
When I am gone, release me, let me go.
You have so many things to see and do.
You mustn't tie yourself to me with tears.
Be happy that we had so many years.

I gave you my love, you can only guess,
How much you gave me in happiness.
I thank you for the love you each have shown,
but now it's time I traveled on alone.

So grieve a while for me, if grieve you must.
Then let your grief be comforted by trust.
It's only a while that we must part,
So bless the memories within your heart.

I won't be far away, for life goes on.
So if you need me, call and I will hear.
Though you can't see or touch me, I'll be near.
And if you listen with your heart, you'll hear,
All of my love around you soft and clear.

And then, when you must come this way,
I'll greet you with a smile and say
"Welcome Home".

I'm Free:
Don't grieve for me, for now I'm free
I'm following the path God laid for me.
I took his hand when I heard him call
I turned my back and left it all.
I could not stay another day.
To laugh, to love, to work or play.
Tasks left undone must stay that way,
I found that peace at close of day.
If my parting has left a void,
Then fill it with remembered joy.
A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss,
Ah yes, these things I too will miss.
Be not burdened with times of sorrow,
I wish you sunshine of tomorrow.
My life's been full, I've savored much,
Good friends, good times,
a loved one's touch.
Perhaps my time seemed all too brief;
Don't lengthen it now with undue grief.
Lift up your hearts and share with me,
God wanted me now;
He set me free.

The Resurrection Prayer:
I am the resurrection and the Life, Saith the Lord: He that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: and whosoever liveth and believeth in me, shall never die.

I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth: and though his body be destroyed, yet shall I see GOD: whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not as a stranger.

We brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. The LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.

Footprints:
One night a man had a dream. In it he was walking along a beach with the Lord. Across the sky flashed scenes from his life. For each scene he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand, one belonging to him, and the other to the Lord.

When the final scene of his life flashed before him, he looked back at the footprints in the sand. He noticed many times along the path of his life there was only one set of footprints and realized that they came at the hardest and saddest times of his life.

Bothered about this, he questioned the Lord, saying "Lord, you said that once I decided to follow you, you'd walk with me all the way. But I have noticed that during the most burdensome times in my life there is only one set of footprints. I don't understand why when I needed you the most you would leave me."

The Lord replied, "My precious child, I love you and I would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you."

The Twenty-Third Psalm:
The Lord is my Shepherd,
I shall not be in want.
He makes me lie down in green
pastures,
He leads me beside quiet waters,
He restores my soul.
He guides me in the path of
righteousness
for His name's sake.
Even though I walk through the valley
of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil, for You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff,
They comfort me.
You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
And I will dwell in the house of the Lord -
forever.

PEACE:
Lord, Make me a channel of thy peace-
That where there is hatred,
I may bring love;
That where there is wrong,
I may bring the spirit of forgiveness;
That where there is discord,
I may bring harmony;
That where there is error,
I may bring truth;
That where there is doubt,
I may bring faith;
That where there is despair,
I may bring hope;
That where there are shadows,
I may bring light;
That where there is sadness,
I may bring joy.
Lord, grant that I may seek rather to comfort
than to be comforted;
To understand, than be understood;
To love, than be loved.
For it is by self-forgetting that one finds.
It is by forgiving that one is forgiven.
It is by dying that one awakens to find -
Eternal Life.
